What Is Up With Tom
Gaming
Conn...Sonar! is a set of rules for playing (or replaying) movies like "Hunt For Red October" on a tabletop with miniature submarine figures. I didn't write the rules, but I play them regularly, and miss having a discussion place for them since I left facebook. Each player commands 1-2 submarines, and it can be played by email instead of on the tabletop. I'll post the rules, the pdf files for the cards for each submarine, ship, helicopter, or plane, and various other information you need.

Toy Soldiers

Normally, when we fight battles with miniature figures we have taken the trouble to paint them in the appropriate uniforms/clothes of the army/people they represent. My Han Chinese army is painted in colorful silks and appropriate hats and shields of the time. Likewise my Prussian Seven Years War figures are painted in appropriate uniforms with proper collars and cuffs for their regiments. But yesterday, we fought a battle with figures designed and painted as what you think of as toy soldiers. The rules were designed to reflect a real toy soldier type battle. You didn't lose any figures. But a unit with bad enough results of conflict would either retreat or be taken off the board (really bad for the latter). So the battle raged back and forth as one side or the other retreated. It wasn't designed to be like a real battle, except as a 4 year old might fight a battle.

Unfortunately, I didn't think to take pictures of the troops. But, the guy who put on the game had a couple pictures so you can see how they look. The cavalry isn't shown in them, but the horses were on wheeled platforms (just like toy soldiers).

The rules were so simple that they only required one page of large type to hold them. This was the first test of these rules, so we made a number of modifications. But we didn't really expand them much, they should still fit on one page.

The battle, BTW, was quite fun, as Gary's rules usually are.

Anniversary Trip

We went to a rental in Easter Washington to celebrate our 51st Anniversary. Bottom line is that we had a good time. Highlights: Beautiful place and views. Access to a very nice stream on a private beach. Coming home, about 11:15am, when we were passing Keechelus Lake (just below the summit of Snoqualmie Pass), we heard what I at first throught was a very loud truck overtaking us, but could not see it in my mirrors. But looking out the left window of the car I saw what I think was an F-18 flying about 50' above our altitude, (or about 150' above the lake level) around 50 yards off to my left! This was followed by two more of the same type planes rolling just like in the video you see of them to make their turns. Total of three of them following the terrain. Cool!!! I haven't seen them in real life doing that, but it is so impressive. Lowlights of the trip, A-Frame house with the bed shoved against the wall is very hard on a tall person who is on the wall side, and Janet fell ...
